Drop 2 chords are chords that occur through displacing the second chord tone (relative to a close position chord) in root position and in each inversion up an octave.

To create a drop 2 chord from a close position chord, check out the process below:

Step 1 – Start with the basic close position chord : Root – Third – Fifth – Seventh

Step 2 – Create a drop 2 chord by displacing the 2 (the second chord tone to appear in close position) up an octave, order is now: Root – Fifth – Seventh – Third

This process works the same for each inversion. Listed below are all the drop 2 inversions as well as close position chords for reference.

The scale degree in bold indicates the displaced chord tone.
